A Dental bridge is a fixed non-removable dental appliance used to replace a missing tooth (or missing teeth). A bridge can be made up of several different materials, the choice of which should be discussed with our team prior to the appointment for the procedure.
A bridge can be used to accomplish the following:
Dental bridges comprise two crowns which go over the anchoring teeth (called abutment teeth), adjacent to the gap. Between the dental crowns, we place an artificial tooth that bridges the space, known as a pontic. This tooth will look and function like a natural tooth. Dental bridges are highly durable and will last many years; however, they may need replacement or need to be re-cemented due to normal wear.
Getting a bridge usually requires two or more visits. While the teeth are numb, the two anchoring teeth are prepared to allow for a crown. Next, a highly accurate 3D Scan or impression (mold) is made which will be sent to a dental laboratory where the bridge will be fabricated. In addition, a temporary bridge will be made and worn for several weeks until your next appointment.
At the second visit, your permanent bridge will be adjusted, and cemented to achieve a proper fit.
Proper brushing, flossing underneath the bridge and regular dental visits will aid in the life of your new permanent bridge. Care instructions for this will be discussed with you at the time the bridge is delivered.
